Ludhiana city was founded in the time of Lodhi dynasty known as Lodhi-ana, which means the town of Lodi's. The name later changed to the present name Ludhiana.
It is the central district of Punjab an is now Punjab's most populated and very rapidly growing metropolitans city. It is on the south bank of the Sutlej River.
Ludhiana, the business Capital of Punjab is the only Industrial city in northern India. It is also known as the Manchester of India. However, Ludhiana's claim to fame is not its commercial enterprises alone. It is an important pilgrimage center as there are many historic Gurdwaras.
The rich agriculture area around it supports a large grain market. The world famous Punjab Agriculture University is in the center of the town. It has an excellent museum.
